When is dental surgery needed?
During your visit, we’ll perform a comprehensive assessment of your mouth and jaws, which may involve the use of dental x-rays or other imaging systems. We may then diagnose the problem and discuss the most suitable treatments with you, which may or may not involve oral surgery.
Tooth extraction
Our preference is always to save a tooth with a filling, root canal or other treatment if possible. However, if a tooth is too badly damaged by decay, gum disease or trauma to repair, removing and replacing the tooth may be the only option to prevent further problems.
An extraction may be simple or complex, depending on whether the tooth is impacted. A simple extraction does not require surgery and may only involve loosening the tooth with forceps before gently pulling it. This procedure is performed using local anaesthesia to numb pain.
Wisdom teeth removal
Wisdom tooth extractions are usually more complex than a standard extraction. The wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and they don’t always need to be removed. However, we may recommend extraction if a wisdom tooth is impacted in the gum, which may lead to infection, or causing teeth crowding.
Jaw, mouth or tooth pain?

Replacing missing teeth
If a permanent tooth falls out or needs to be extracted, it should be replaced with an artificial tooth as soon as possible. Not only does this restore the appearance and function of your smile, it also helps to support the surrounding teeth.
Oral surgery is sometimes needed during preparation for a dental bridge and is always involved when placing a dental implant in the jaw. Implants or a bridge can replace one or several teeth.
